Hi Zoe. Thank you for your article but think you may be muddling tax and charity. Tax isn't charity; It's taken, not given. We don't have a moral obligation to pay additional tax but we do have a moral obligation to be as charitable as possible. No idea about Richard Tice but I'd hesitate to judge anyone's moral character by their tax return.

In the case of Tice, it is neither taken, nor give. This is at the heart of the problem. There should be no grey areas on tax. He is already a multi millionaire, he should pay his dues like everybody else.

Hi David. If grey areas and legal tax avoidance schemes were removed so that Tice was forced to pay more, would that make him a better person? If not, why does it make him a worse person for paying less? In both instances he'd be fulfilling the same moral obligation to pay what was legally due.

He would be paying what he owes, so whooppee. All of us who pay by PAYE pay what we owe. The vast majority of us do not employ accountants to find grey areas to avoid paying what we owe. Tice deliberately avoiding paying tax shows him to be a man who doesn’t pay his way. This is not something to be proud of. Someone who has the interest of his country in mind would not be looking at ways to avoid contributing to that country.
