Great read , but what finished Starmer for me was his approach to Israel, well peaceful protests against them to be specific, his treatment of disabled people, incapacity to tax the wealthy, whilst going after small businesses (they don't seem to get small business!) and his reluctance to say controlled immigration is good for the country. he may well have been doing great things as well, but did we know about it, no......
I'd agree, Jane, but I'd also argue those things are connected!
Starmer and many of his advisers became obsessed with winning over a group of voters they believed were deeply hostile to anything that felt remotely left-wing. In the process, they often seemed willing to alienate the very people who had powered Labour's support for years.
Part of my argument is that Brexit helped create that worldview. It strengthened the belief among some Labour figures that the route to power lay in constantly chasing culturally conservative voters, and for those who already thought that way, Brexit only reinforced it (which is one reason Blue Labour became so influential).
