Pitch us!
We're after stories that encourage our readers to make an impact. Don't just submit an argument against inequality: reveal the policy (or lack of policy) behind it. Give us the bad guys - but the good ones too, and tell readers how they can lend a hand. Crucially, tell us who in power should be pressured, and how to make a difference.
The perfect The Lead piece would tackle a systemic problem, propose a solution, and tell readers how they can help - whether by boosting those working for change or by pressuring and persuading those who resist it. Make sure you’ve read our About page for more about The Lead before pitching.
Our formats:
The Lead Untangles: running to 600 words this is our explainer format and is written to a set template on a swift turnaround to explain a topic beyond the headlines and is £125 per piece. Send them to pitches@thelead.uk
ReformWatch: story tips on Reform up to no good? Councils in chaos? Suspected foul play? Let us know to pitches@thelead.uk - we’ll pay for story tips, news stories or a fully formed ReformWatch column.
Op-eds: these start at £150 per piece and run between 600-1,000 words (guide word count) depending on the topic. See our The Lead Says section for examples. Send them to pitches@thelead.uk
Story series. These will go deep on a topic or issue, and bring exclusive and under-reported stories to light - not just in writing but also with video, essays, op-eds and more. If you’d like to pitch a story series, please use this form.
We are very open to collaborations with other publications, or to issuing letters of interest for freelancers applying for funds from journalism funders.
Please note:
The Lead is a small editorial team, and many of us work part-time. We may not respond to every pitch.
